Danny Kaye Rules!
Whoof, getting the kids to school this morning was no easy feat, because we were all exhausted from driving 800 miles over the last three days. We drove to SoCal on Friday, visiting my brother and his family briefly before heading over to Kay's parents, spending Saturday with them, and driving back on Sunday. We normally wouldn't attempt such a crammed travel schedule, but the Pilgrim Place festival takes place only once a year, and Grandpa especially wanted the kids to experience it. You don't have your family forever; cherish the opportunities.
Travel has become much easier over the years. Our latest trick is the PowerBook/Netflix combination: the kids bug their eyes out for hours watching DVDs. For this trip, I got them The Garfield Movie (hey, I don't have to watch it!), Disney's Aladdin, and The Court Jester starring Danny Kaye. I grew up listening to Danny Kaye records so I have a certain fondness for him, but I wasn't sure how an old-fashioned movie would play to a media-saturated generation (like the timing being slower).
The kids love Garfield comics, so they laughed when they saw the characters portrayed in a movie -- for the first few minutes. Then the laughing seemed to stop.
Then they watched The Court Jester, and laughed uproariously! And they watched their favorite bits over again.
Finally they watched Aladdin, and seemed to enjoy it well enough.
But once Aladdin was done, they popped The Court Jester in and watched it again... and again!
"Get it?"
"Got it."
"Good!"
and
"The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon. The vessel with the pestle holds the brew that is true!"
and
"A jester unemployed....is Nobody's Fool!"
Fun movie. Angela Lansbury as the scheming princess!

Evan, I remember you doing "the vessel with the pestle" at Adobe. :-)
Helen, if this is a new movie to you, you guys should watch it with the kids.

We saw the movie and it was hilarious! Great family fun. My kids wanted to watch it again and still make comments on some of the funny scenes. Thanks for the great recommendation.

Hi Everyone,
Looking for the Danny Kaye childrens record that has the story called " Stone Soup". Danny Kaye does a a wonderful rendition of this famous story.
I would sure like to get a copy of the album or at least the name & date of the album.
If anyone knows I would love to hear from you.
Thanks,

"Garfield The Movie" is wonderful with perfect 3D graphic. Garfield in the movie is really a cool and smart cat who can dance admirably. When he went to the tall building to saved the dog Odie and went down, it was very cool! But it was so dangerous when he dropped down from the tall building.
The story line is superb and jokey, and the actress is very beautiful and cute. It was very incredible for Jon that the girl could love him, I also have the same feeling and the same experience with Jon.
